Hulu released a first-look trailer for the show during the 93rd Academy Awards airing on ABC on April 25, 2021.[28] The miniseries premiered on Hulu on August 18, 2021, with the first three episodes released at once, and a new episode released weekly thereafter.[5] The finale was released on September 22, 2021.[29] Outside of the United States and China, the series was released on Prime Video.[30] It was broadcast free-to-air in Australia on SBS TV in October/November 2022.[31]

"Nine Perfect Strangers," a miniseries adaptation of the Liane Moriarty novel, premiered on August 18 on Hulu. The show stars Nicole Kidman as a wellness retreat host who pushes her nine handpicked guests to their limits.

Or maybe it's not a critique at all, but a character study. Masha creepily "curates" attendees at her resort, much like the mysterious host in Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None. And she's assembled quite the crew. I spent the entirety of the first episode waiting for each of the titular nine strangers to succumb to Christie-style deaths, but no dice.

Tonally, Nine Perfect Strangers is all over the place, a melting pot of comedy, romance, magical realism, horror and suspense. Throughout their stay at Tranquillum, the nine strangers flit through the woods like Hermia and Lysander. They writhe and scream like patients under Nurse Ratched's care. They indulge in desperate credulity like characters in a NXIVM cult docuseries. They bicker and attack each other, they fall in love, they hallucinate, they share deep, dark secrets, they compete in a potato sack race.

The photography and set design are beautiful, and many of the performances are moving -- Bobby Canavale's wounded ex-athlete and Michael Shannon's grieving father are particularly poignant. And Regina Hall clearly understood the assignment with her portrayal of wronged woman Carmel. But the shapelessness of the story and the vagueness of its mysteries give the sense this miniseries was constructed by some sort of algorithm. The cast's clamorous collection of grief, betrayal, commitment phobia, loneliness and professional failure creates a screenwriting challenge that Kelley and team can't quite meet. Perhaps nine perfect strangers is just too many to get to know in a limited run.

The eight-episode miniseries marks Kidman's third collaboration with writer-producer David E. Kelley, after last year's "The Undoing" and two seasons of "Big Little Lies," both on HBO. "Strangers" is based on the 2018 book by Liane Moriarty, who also wrote "Lies" and is a close friend of Kidman's.

With Nine Perfect Strangers' release looming, viewers will soon be able to see how the mystery unfolds. The marketing has sold the star-studded cast and an intriguing premise, with Nicole Kidman's involvement and the talent behind it making it among the most anticipated shows of 2021. But where and when will new episodes be released, and how many episodes are included in the miniseries? Here's how to watch Nine Perfect Strangers once it releases on Hulu.

Was Hulu miniseries Nine Perfect Strangers (opens in new tab) an overly complicated story about forgiveness, healing, and wellness (opens in new tab) or a trippy tale about grifting? Depends on who you ask (and how many drug-induced hallucinations you're experiencing). If you're in the camp of the former, well, then the show ended succinctly, providing everyone a (albeit undeserved) happy ending. Personally, I prefer the latter, in which Masha is a criminal genius who extorted her way out of jail and into a yellow Lamborghini, and the show is a cultural commentary on the power of persuasion. So let's use that lens to unpack what happened to our strangers in the finale, "Ever After." (opens in new tab)

Well, the "nine perfect strangers" of the title is a little deceptive, because some of the characters in this story know each other from the beginning. Nevertheless, this listen follows nine guests who all go on a 10-day retreat to the Tranquillum House, a health and wellness resort that promises to transform everyone who stays there. Every guest has different reasons for wanting to come to the resort. Some are looking to relax. Some want to lose weight. Others are trying to deal with grief, while still others are struggling with addiction. But the longer the guests stay at the Tranquillum House, the more they begin to realize that this place is not at all what it seems.

Nine Perfect Strangers is intended to be a miniseries, which means the eighth episode marks the end of the story. Yet perhaps, maybe there's room for more? Fans are holding out hope! (After all, the miniseries based on Liane Moriarty's novel Big Little Lies was extended to two seasons.) While no plans have yet been made for a second season, it's not completely out of the question.

After the success of Big Little Lies, it's not a surprise that there are more adaptations of author Liane Moriarty's books in the works. One of these is Nine Perfect Strangers, a new Hulu drama about nine people attending the same ten-day retreat at a health spa called Tranquilium. Neither Tranquilium nor its owner Masha are as they seem, but the twists and turns that occur throughout the week unfold slightly differently in the book and in the show. Even in the first three episodes, Nine Perfect Strangers has taken Moriarty's book in a new direction. Here are the biggest changes so far:

Each episode includes brief reveals as to what brought each of these nine people to seek a transformation from Masha. Masha herself, with the aid of Yao (Manny Jacinto) and Delilah (Tiffany Boone), has a past that comes back to haunt her. While things begin with an aspirational perspective, the elements of civilized society begin to break down. Nine Perfect Strangers presents this story with some of the mysterious twists of series like Lost crossed with Lord of the Flies. There is a commentary here on subjects like opioid addiction, teen suicide, body dysmorphia, and even addiction to social media, but all of that feels superficial. The core story here is really focused on why these people are here and is there a darker connection between them all.

The meditation room scene and the majority of the scenes within Tranquillum took place within a real-life spa named Soma, located just outside Byron Bay. Soma was seen as the ideal Nine Perfect Strangers film set due to how perfectly it fit along with the genre of the series. To get to the location, you just need to drive past the Pacific Highway and then head down Kennedys Lane to find Soma. Feel free to stop by and enjoy the sights and sounds that take you to another world, much like the journey that Masha and the nine guests underwent.

The setting is a remote, controversial, new-age spa called Tranquillum House, a California retreat run by a spiritual, mysterious woman named Masha. With a Russian accent, a very slow and deliberate manner of talking and an almost ethereal presence, she's played by Nicole Kidman. It's yet another deep and challenging role she's inhabited since opting to focus on TV miniseries as well as movies. Her other TV work includes not only a previous Moriarty TV adaptation of "Big Little Lies" but also another excellent HBO drama, "The Undoing." But "Nine Perfect Strangers" is more of an ensemble than a solo turn. And the nine strangers gathered by Masha for a concentrated dose of healing and of personal discovery are impeccably cast.

According to Hulu's website, the miniseries drama -- which is based on a book by the same name, by Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty -- depicts the varying journeys of "nine stressed city dwellers" as they try to transform their lives for the better through a 10-day retreat at a boutique health-and-wellness resort, with Kidman's character as the resort's director.

After the success of Big Little Lies, Nicole Kidman is coming back to Liane Moriarty's aesthetic. This time, the Australian actress isn't a wealthy suburban mother, but a kind of guru leading a rest center for wealthy, anxious city dwellers. Released in 2018, the novel will be adapted by David Edward Kelley, who worked on Big Little Lies and The Undoing. Broadcast on Hulu in the United States, Nine perfect strangers will be available in France this summer on Amazon Prime as a mini-series of eight episodes.

As in most stories that bring strangers together on neutral ground, everyone has a secret or three. The trouble is, few of these revelations succeed in building suspense. Early episodes unfold at such a languorous pace that you can forget the story is supposed to have any stakes at all. When they are finally raised to an intriguing degree, in the last of the six episodes (out of eight total) sent for review, it just feels too late to make up so much momentum.

The eight-episode miniseries is based on New York Times best-selling author Liane Moriarty's Nine Perfect Strangers, which centers on nine guests at a pricey wellness resort run by reformed corporate executive-turned-spiritual leader Masha (Nicole Kidman). The streaming show also stars Melissa McCarthy, Michael Shannon, Luke Evans, Bobby Cannavale, Regina Hall, Samara Weaving, Melvin Gregg, Asher Keddie, Grace Van Patten, Tiffany Boone and Manny Jacinto.
