What is Iqbal Movie About?

Iqbal is a movie that combines the themes of passion, determination, and overcoming challenges. It is a movie that will make you laugh, cry, and cheer for the protagonist as he pursues his dream of becoming a cricketer.

The Plot

Iqbal (Shreyas Talpade) is a deaf and mute boy who lives with his parents and sister in a small village. He loves cricket and idolizes Kapil Dev, but his father (Yatin Karyekar) disapproves of his obsession and wants him to help with the farming. Iqbal's sister, Khadija (Shweta Prasad), supports his passion and helps him join a nearby cricket academy run by Guruji (Girish Karnad), a former India captain. However, Iqbal faces discrimination and rivalry from Kamal (Aadarsh Balakrishna), the star player of the academy and the son of a rich sponsor. Guruji eventually kicks out Iqbal after a confrontation with Kamal.

Iqbal then seeks help from Mohit (Naseeruddin Shah), a local drunkard who was once a great cricketer but lost his career due to alcoholism. Mohit agrees to coach Iqbal after seeing his talent and potential. He trains him in a nearby field with the help of Iqbal's buffaloes, who are named after famous cricketers. Mohit also manages to get Iqbal a place in the Andhra Pradesh Ranji Trophy team, despite his lack of experience. Iqbal impresses everyone with his bowling skills and attracts the attention of the media and the selectors.

However, when Iqbal has to face Kamal's team in the final match of the season, he is offered a bribe by Guruji to underperform so that Kamal can get selected for the national team. Iqbal initially accepts the offer out of concern for his father's financial troubles, but later changes his mind after getting a better deal from a sports agent. He bowls with his full strength and wins the match for his team. He also catches the eye of Kapil Dev (in a cameo role), who is one of the selectors for the national team. Iqbal fulfills his dream of playing for India when he gets selected for the team.

The Cast and Crew

The cast of Iqbal consists of talented actors who deliver convincing performances. Shreyas Talpade, who plays the titular role, is especially remarkable as he conveys his emotions through his expressions and gestures without uttering a single word. Naseeruddin Shah, who plays Mohit, is also brilliant as he portrays the character's transformation from a cynical alcoholic to a supportive mentor. Shweta Prasad, who plays Khadija, is adorable as she plays the loyal sister and the biggest fan of Iqbal. The other actors, such as Yatin Karyekar, Girish Karnad, and Aadarsh Balakrishna, also do justice to their roles.

The crew of Iqbal consists of talented professionals who work behind the scenes to make the movie a success. Nagesh Kukunoor, who is the writer and director of the movie, deserves praise for his original and engaging script and his skillful direction. He manages to balance the elements of drama, comedy, and emotion in the movie. He also avoids the clichés and stereotypes that are common in sports movies. The cinematography by Sudeep Chatterjee is also commendable as he captures the beauty and simplicity of the rural setting and the intensity and excitement of the cricket matches. The music by Salim-Sulaiman and Sukhwinder Singh is also catchy and uplifting, especially the songs "Aashayein" and "Khelenge Khelenge".
